The Indian car buyer is evolving. Along with luxury and comfort, the mileage is also an important factor the Indian car lovers have to figure in. With fuel prices soaring so high, the diesel cars are getting as much popularity as the petrol cars used to get, a few years back. A lot of car manufacturers are also focusing on the diesel engines to keep them updated among the car lovers.
Honda City, with its all new 1.5-litre i-DTEC diesel engine, is claimed to return a whooping 26 kmpl. In real condition, this car returns fuel efficiency close to 18-19 kmpl in city, which goes to 24-25 kmpl on highways. This best-in-class mileage figures has definitely helped Honda City become the top-selling mid-sized in no time.
Another car from the stables of Honda, Honda Amaze was the first Honda car to get the 1.5-litre i-DTEC diesel engine, and claimed to deliver 25.8 kmpl. With such mileage figures, the Amaze too is the most fuel efficient car in its league.
The new diesel engine of the Amaze is basically a striped down version of the 1.6-litre diesel mill, though it carries the same hardware, friction and weight. To bring its capacity below 1.5-litre, the Honda reduced the stroke and used a smaller turbo.
With the smallest diesel engine of its segment, the Chevrolet Beat diesel features a 1.0-litre Smartech engine (57.6 bhp, 150 Nm) and returns the best-in-class mileage of 25.4 kmpl. In real driving conditions, this car manages to return 20 kmpl in city and close to 25 kmpl on highways, which makes it a real good car for daily commuting and occasional highway driving.
Branded as India’s cheapest car, Tata Nano, with a mileage of 25.4 kmpl, is also the most fuel efficient smallest car in India. As the Nano was developed keeping urban requirements in mind, everything from size, pricing and mileage were also kept accordingly.
Launched in 2013, the Grand i10 has been a runaway success for Hyundai India. Other than a new fluidic inspired design, the diesel i10 derives its power from the 1.1-litre U2 CRDi engine and claims to return the best-in-industry mileage of 24 kmpl.
Maruti, the most loved car manufacturer in India, launched its Maruti Swift Dzire with a DDiS diesel engine that holds the capability of producing 1248 cc displacement with 75 PS of power and 190 Nm at 2000 rpm. With a mileage of 19.3-23.5 kmpl, the Dzire and has been highly appreciated by car lovers.
As buyers still continue to make a beeline for the diesel cars and the cars accounting for more than 50% sale, a great future is seen in the diesel variants.
